Shoppers increasingly ask AI assistants things like "best waterproof hiking boots under €150" and get product suggestions back. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI features and Microsoft Copilot have all added shopping experiences. Nobody can guarantee your products will be recommended, but stores that are easy for these systems to read and trust have a real advantage. Here is what's within your control.
1. Let the AI search crawlers in
Shopify generates a default robots.txt that allows crawlers, but themes, apps and edits to robots.txt.liquid can change that. Check yourstore.com/robots.txt and make sure OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot aren't disallowed. Blocking GPTBot only affects training, not shopping answers. Our crawler guide has copy-paste rules.
Also check that your store isn't password protected and that bot-protection apps aren't challenging legitimate crawlers.
2. Make product data complete and specific
AI assistants match products to detailed requests. Vague products lose. For each product:
- Title: brand + product type + key attribute ("Merino Wool Hiking Socks, Women's, Cushioned"), not just a creative name.
- Description: plain facts first: materials, sizes, dimensions, compatibility, who it's for, care instructions. Write it as text, not only inside images.
- Identifiers: fill in barcode (GTIN/EAN/UPC) where you have them, plus SKU and vendor. Identifiers help systems match your product to the same item elsewhere.
- Variants: real options with their own prices and stock, not one product with "choose color in notes".
- Images: clear photos with descriptive alt text.
- Product category: set Shopify's standard product category so the type is unambiguous.
3. Keep structured data correct
Most Shopify themes output Product structured data with name, price, currency, availability and images. Test a product page with Google's Rich Results Test. Common problems: missing availability, prices that don't match the visible price, or two conflicting Product blocks from a theme plus an app. Fix duplicates by disabling one source.
4. Feed the shopping graphs
AI shopping results often draw on product feeds and catalogs, not just crawled pages. Practical steps:
- Google: install the Google & YouTube app and connect Merchant Center so your products are eligible for free listings across Google surfaces.
- Shopify's own channels: Shopify has been adding ways for merchants to make products available in AI assistants. Check your Shopify admin (sales channels and settings) for current options in your region, since availability varies.
- Microsoft: Microsoft Merchant Center can import from Google Merchant Center.
Keep feed prices and stock in sync with your store. Mismatches can get products disapproved.
5. Publish clear policies
Assistants and shoppers both look for trust signals. Fill in Shopify's policy pages (refunds, shipping, privacy, terms, contact) under Settings, and link them in your footer. State shipping times, costs and return windows in plain text. A store with no visible return policy is harder to recommend with confidence.
6. Build identity and reputation off-site
AI answers often lean on reviews, comparisons and mentions on other sites. Add Organization schema with your official profiles, collect genuine product reviews with a reputable app, and get listed in relevant niche directories and roundups. Never fake reviews: it breaks platform rules and consumer law in the EU.
7. Make pages readable without JavaScript
Product names, prices and descriptions should be in the HTML the server sends. Some apps inject key content with JavaScript only, which many crawlers don't run. View the page source to confirm the important text is there.

FAQ
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT shopping?
OpenAI states that its shopping results are not ads and are chosen based on relevance. You can't buy placement there; you can make your products easier to understand.
Do I need a special app?
Not necessarily. Complete product data, correct structured data, crawler access and a connected Merchant Center cover most of the basics.
Does blocking GPTBot hurt my Shopify store in AI shopping?
Blocking GPTBot affects training only. Make sure OAI-SearchBot and other AI search bots are allowed.
